Black Doom is the main antagonist from the game Shadow the Hedgehog. Black Doom is the archenemy of Shadow the Hedgehog, similar to what Doctor Eggman is to Sonic the Hedgehog. Black Doom is the leader and commander of the aliens Black Arms. Depending on which path the player choose (Hero or Dark), Black Doom will either be an ally or a foe of Shadow the Hedgehog. He has a Dark Lord persona, his worn robe and jewelry give him the appearance of a priest and his motivation for conquering the world seems almost religious in nature. Black Doom is more malevolent and powerful than the other Sonic villains.

Black Doom intended to invade the Earth for over two thousand years. The bird-shaped ruins in Glyphic Canyon and Sky Troops are revealed to be flying temples transported to Earth by Black Doom over two thousand years ago to be used as weapons. Fifty years prior to the game, Gerald Robotnik contacted the Black Comet and formed an alliance with Black Doom. The professor used the DNA in Black Doom's blood to create the Ultimate Life Form, Shadow the Hedgehog (technically making Black Doom Shadow's father), in order to expand Gerald's research and help Black Doom retrieve the Chaos Emeralds so he could teleport the Black Comet to Earth and conquer the planet. When Gerald learned of Black Doom's intentions he had the Eclipse Cannon built to destroy the Black Comet. At the beginning of the game Black Doom appears before Shadow as a hologram and commands him to find the Chaos Emeralds. Throughout the game Black Doom uses Shadow to fulfill his goals, and constantly tries to convince him to join the Black Arms and renounce his alliance with humans. He tries to win Shadow over by trying to manipulate Shadow into believing that no good can come from the continued existence of humanity. In the true ending, Shadow retrieves the Chaos Emeralds and Black Doom takes them, and reveals that he needed them to amplify his Chaos Control to transport the Black Comet to Earth. In the end, he transforms into a much more monstrous and powerful form: Devil Doom. Also using the Emeralds, Shadow transforms into Super Shadow, and he is able to defeat Devil Doom, sending him tumbling down toward the city below.

In addition to being the ruler of the Black Arms, Black Doom has a variety of other powers. Among them are the ability to use Chaos Control and to separate his third eye, known as "Doom's Eye", from his body, allowing him to observe events from great distances and project holograms with which he can speak to and interact with other beings by deploying some of his other powers. He also seems to possess the power to travel through solid barriers, though this may be just a manifestation of other abilities in the fields of telekinesis or teleportation. Doom can telepathically command any being with Black Arms heritage, an ability he used against Shadow briefly before Shadow broke free.

In battle, Black Doom uses a variety of techniques, prominent among them flying around and leaving after images capable of launching attacks. He can also create an energy shield, but this is ineffective when he isn't moving. Black Doom's various attacks include meteors, the Swift Strike energy boomerang, and flaming blades. Going along with the fact that he doesn't have legs, his primary means of locomotion is levitation.

While in his Devil Doom incarnation, Black Doom appears as a massive gargoyle-like figure whose body is connected to a large stone at the base of his torso. Devil Doom is a winged figure with two arms and two heads, the latter present on opposite sides of his body. In this form, his one vulnerable spot is Doom's Eye, which moves from head to head to control Devil Doom and unleash powerful attacks. These include super-powered telekinesis, which allows him to manipulate a large number of objects and hurl them at enemies. Other than that, Devil Doom's main method of attack is breathing or otherwise conjuring fire.
The Black Arms are an evil, almost demonic alien race led by Black Doom. They appear in the game Shadow the Hedgehog, where they invaded Earth in search of the seven Chaos Emeralds, and are battled by the game's main character Shadow the Hedgehog, along with other characters. They dwell on a massive comet, simply known as the Black Comet, which passes by Earth every fifty years. The Black Comet itself seems to act as if it were alive or at least techno-organic in nature, as its interior seems to be partially composed of organic matter, complete with deadly bodily fluid looking liquids, protruding tentacles, throat like caverns, and strange pulsating growths. The Black Arms come in several shapes but nearly all are characterized by jet black and crimson skin. The Black Arms start out life as a small, weak larva stage known as Death Leeches, which are in fact Black Doom's offspring. There are the standard troopers known as "Black Warriors", that act as the main footsoldiers. Many other variations also exist.

In Shadow the Hedgehog they are out to collect the Chaos Emeralds so that they can use Chaos Control to teleport their Black Comet to the Earth's surface, where it digs into the planet and releases a toxic gas that paralyzes all life without Black Arms DNA. After Black Doom is defeated, Shadow uses Chaos Control to send the Black Comet into space again, where he blasts it with the Eclipse Cannon on the Space Colony ARK, destroying it along with the Black Arms residing inside it.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, the Black Arms also appear locked in war with another alien race known as the Xorda. For the time being, this war keeps both of them away from Sonic's home planet of Mobius.
